Axial Compression Test Fixture
Ratio Made Inc.
Challenge:
No standardized testing method exists to quantify stiffness for Nordic ski poles.
It was also necessary to measure ultimate strength of the poles to ensure they would withstand the force of competitive athletes.
Total test fixture budget was limited to $1,500.
Methods:
Researched Nordic skiing biomechanics to get approximate loading range.
Designed novel fixturing to replicate eccentric axial loading from real-world conditions.
Wrote Python program to interface with load cell, record measurements, and output CSVs for analysis.
Designed and implemented modular upgrades:
Laser distance meter with linear encoder for deflection measurement and profile
Electromagnetic ball-drop for impact testing
Results:
Successful ownership of test fixture from design to implementation. Total delivered cost: $1,290
Data analysis from testing was used in root cause analysis to identify cause for premature pole failure and validate corrective action for 15% strength increase in Nordic ski poles.
